With the Tokyo Olympics around the corner and the country already in the ‘sports mode’, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) and Regional Outreach, Bureau (ROB) Chandigarh, today, organised a webinar on the topic “Women in Sports”. Eminent international sportspersons Dr. MP Ganesh, Olympian & former captain of Indian men’s hockey team and Ms. Anjum Chopra, former captain, Indian women’s cricket team were the guest speakers. Both the speakers are Padma Shree and Arjuna Awardees in their fields.

In her welcome address, Smt. Devpreet Singh, Additional Director General, PIB, Chandigarh lauded the stellar achievements of women sportspersons who have made the country proud by overcoming various obstacles that line the way. 

Dr. Mullera Poovayya Ganesh was also coach of the Indian team and awarded the Arjuna Award in 1973 and the Padma Shri in 2020. Ms. Anjum Chopra is a cricket analyst and the first woman sportscaster on television in India. She received the Arjuna Award in 2007 and the Padma Shri in 2014, for her accomplishments.

In a gripping conversation, answering a question from the audience, Ms. Anjum said, “Everyone needs encouragement, be it a male or a female member. However, the world is different for a man and a woman. Sports are generally associated with the male gender. It is our generation which will change this perception.”

When asked which role viz. of an ace cricketer, an actor or a commentator brought her the most happiness, she was quick to respond “To earn and put on the India Blazer, was my greatest accolade”.

In the engaging discussion on hockey, Dr. MP Ganesh said, “India needs to play its own game. India should have its own national coaches for players to form a constant long-term playing strategy. There is no dearth of talent in India.” He also said that foreign coaches should only be called for short terms to resolve specific

He stressed that sports should be made a compulsory subject in the middle and high schools, as it will help India nurture a greater talent pool. When answering a question about involvement of sports persons in administration, Sh. MP Ganesh said, “Civil servants who are good in sports should be brought into sports administration and that too for long periods.”

Sh. Himanshu Pathak, Assistant Director, PIB Chandigarh moderated the session. The webinar was attended by students from various schools and colleges, coaches & trainee athletes from the regional centres of Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Ministry of Information & Broadcasting officials from the region.

Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria, PVSM AVSM VM ADC, Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) visited Headquarters Training Command Bengaluru to attend the Training Command Commanders’ Conference held on 28 & 29 July 21.

On arrival, the CAS was received by Air Marshal RD Mathur, PVSM AVSM VSM ADC, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief Training Command. CAS was presented with a Guard of Honour at the Headquarters.

In his address to the Commanders, CAS highlighted the need to be vigilant and remain poised to undertake all operational tasks assigned to the IAF. CAS commended the hard work put in by all the training academies and stations under Training Command for ensuring timely completion of training commitments, despite severe constraints placed due to second wave of COVID. He also lauded the professionalism shown by air warriors of the Command during conduct of the International event – Aero India 21 and the Chiefs’ of Air Staff Conclave held at Yelahanka during the month of February this year.


The CAS presented the ‘Best Stations’ trophies to the recipients and in his closing remarks urged the Commanders to continue their efforts towards building a strong foundation by grooming the young men and women in their formative years, since this forms the bedrock for enhancing the operational capability and transformation of the IAF.

So far 703km length of National Highways have been constructed using waste plastic in wearing coat of flexible pavement. Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued guidelines for mandatory use of waste plastic in Periodic Renewal with hot mixes and in wearing coat of service road on NHs within 50km periphery of urban area having population of more than 5 lakhs.Use of plastic waste in construction of road protects the environment from adverse impact of waste plastic.

This information was given by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Shri NitinGadkari in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

PM to launch multiple key initiatives to mark the first anniversary of National Education Policy 2020

Initiatives mark a significant step towards realization of the goals of NEP 2020

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will address policy makers in the domain of education and skill development, students, teachers,  across the country on 29th July  2021, via video conferencing, to mark the completion of one year of reforms under the National  Education Policy 2020. He will also launch multiple initiatives in the education sector.

Prime Minister will launch the Academic Bank of Credit that will provide multiple entry and exit options for students in Higher education; 1st Year Engineering Programmes in Regional Languages and Guidelines for Internationalization of Higher Education.

The initiatives to be launched also include Vidya Pravesh, a three month play based school preparation module for Grade 1 students; Indian Sign Language as a Subject at secondary level; NISHTHA 2.0, an integrated programme of teacher training designed by NCERT; SAFAL (Structured Assessment For Analyzing Learning Levels), a competency based assessment framework for Grades 3, 5 and 8 in CBSE schools; and a website dedicated to  Artificial Intelligence.

Further, the event will witness the launch of National Digital Education Architecture (NDEAR) and National Education Technology Forum (NETF).

These initiatives will mark a significant step towards realization of the goals of NEP 2020 and will make the education sector more vibrant and accessible.

The NEP, 2020 is the guiding philosophy for changing the learning landscape, making education holistic and for building strong foundations for an Atmanirbhar Bharat.

This is the first education policy of the 21st century and replaces the thirty-four year old National Policy on Education (NPE), 1986.  Built on the foundational pillars of Access, Equity, Quality, Affordability and Accountability, this policy is aligned to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and aims to transform India into a vibrant knowledge society and global knowledge superpower by making both school and college education more holistic, flexible, multidisciplinary, suited to 21st century needs and aimed at bringing out the unique capabilities of each student.

The Union Education Minister will also be present on the occasion.

Upliftment of Transgenders

The transgender persons face several issues of discrimination, exclusion from the families, absence of dignified livelihoods, inadequate access to health, shelter, welfare and employment.

In order to address these issues, the Government has enacted “The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019” and issued the the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Rules 2020. They address the issues of provision of identity, protection of rights against discrimination and provision of welfare measures by the State and Central Governments.

National Council for Transgender Persons was constituted in August 2020 to advise Government on policies, programmes, legislation and projects with respect to Transgender Persons.

Ministry also launched National Portal for Transgender Persons on 25th November, 2020. Through this portal any Transgender applicant can obtain Certificate of Identity and Identity Card without any physical interface with the office of issue.The Transgender applicant can apply for the Certificate of Identity from anywhere in the Country and application automatically goes to the inbox of the competent authority of issue. On issue of the certificate, the same can be downloaded by the applicant directly.

Ministry has initiated 12 pilot shelter homes and provided financial assistance to community based organizations (CBOs) for setting up of these shelter homes ‘Garima Greh’ for Transgender persons. These pilot shelter homes are in States of Maharashtra, Delhi, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu and Odisha. The main aim of these shelter homes is to provide safe and secure shelter to Transgender persons in need. These shelter homes would provide basic amenities like food, medical care, recreational facilities and also conduct capacity-building/ skill development programmes for Transgender persons.

This information was given by The Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Shri. A. Narayanaswamy in the Rajya Sabha in a written reply today.
