Union Home Minister, Shri Amit Shah, chaired the 36th meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Official Language, in New Delhi

Today it is a matter of great pride for all of us that we have given approval to send the 10th Report of the Committee to the President

Prime Minister has respected our official language by speaking in Hindi on many occasions and also at various international forums

Under the leadership of Narendra Modi, the work of translation of technical education and medical education has also been started in the official language and change is going to come in the country

We are entering the 75th year of Independence, in these 75 years we have taken the roots of democracy to the villages and towns and made democracy natural to us

On 75 years of Independence, the theme at conferences should be the role of official language in the freedom movement in Hindi

After Independence ruling dispensations changed many times but peacefully, this shows that roots of democracy in the country are deepening and becoming stronger and the banyan tree of democracy is growing bigger

The biggest contribution of our local languages and especially the official language Hindi was in the Freedom Struggle

During the freedom movement, importance was given to languages by our great Freedom Fighters and they were aware that English should not be dominant, that is why today all Indian languages are rich

We have preserved and promoted all the dialects that were there after Independence and have preserved all the languages that were there, as well as all the scripts that were there, these languages are also progressing under the auspices of Devanagari

Local languages and official language have worked to unite the country, that is why the Official Language Committee is the most important committee of Parliament

We should create such an environment in which the development of official language – Hindi should take place naturally as a friend of the local languages

There can be no competition between any local language and Hindi because both of them are friends or sisters, if we encourage this feeling, then only we will be able to take this work forward

For children studying history, if the history of every part of the country will be available in the official language, the history from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, then the scope of the official language will automatically increase

There is similarity between our languages, there is also an invisible dialogue and it can be known only by feeling it

Many words of every Indian language are associated with another language, the root of grammar is also the same

As we enter the 75th year of Independence, the relevance and utility of our committee both increase greatly

All speeches of the Prime Minister in Parliament are also in Hindi and the Committee should take inspiration from this request

Commentary was arranged in Hindi for the first time in Tokyo Olympics

The Union Home Minister, Shri Amit Shah, chaired the 36th meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Official Language in New Delhi today. Union Minister of State for Home Shri Ajay Kumar Mishra and Deputy Chairman of Parliamentary Committee on Official Language Shri Bhartrihari Mahtab were also present at the meeting. On this occasion, the Union Home Minister said that today it is a matter of great pride for all of us that we have given approval to send the 10th Report of the Committee to the President. We will call on him to present the Report. Shri Amit Shah said that yesterday, 9th August was a historic day and this year 9th August has special significance because we are entering the 75th year of Independence. After a long period of slavery, our country became independent on 15 August 1947. He said that if these 75 years are evaluated, then it can be said that in these 75 years, everyone together has taken the roots of democracy to the villages and towns and has made democracy natural to us.

Shri Amit Shah said that he has read the history of many democratic countries. Having accepted the multiparty parliamentary system in India, we did not have any problem in taking it down to the bottom most level, it happened in a very natural way. There was no struggle. The Home Minister said there were different type of government systems in the country for centuries. There groups of vested interests and for long they also exploited society. But all changed in a single day without any bloodshed. Shri Shah said that after Independence there were many changes in power, even at that time there was no bloodshed. This shows that day by day the roots of our democracy are getting deeper and stronger and the banyan tree of democracy is growing bigger.

The Union Home Minister said that I do not know whether the country has been able to fulfill the dreams of Freedom Fighters or not. Maybe our pace may be a little slow but I can say with certainty that our path is right and we will definitely reach our goal. Shri Amit Shah said that our local languages and especially the official language Hindi has the biggest contribution in this. He said that the values of democracy are not new in our country, we had the first democracy in the world and we cannot preserve this culture without language. During the Freedom Movement, importance was given to our languages by our leaders and they showed awareness that English should not be dominant, that is why our languages are rich today. Local languages are also prosperous and day by day the official language Hindi has also been enriched. The Home Minister said that neither the original script nor language has survived in many countries, but he is proud that after Independence, we have preserved and the dialects that were there and saved as many languages as they were. At the same time, all the scripts are also progressing under the auspices of Devanagari. This did not cause any rift in the unity and integrity of the country, the local languages and the official language have worked to unite the country. For this reason, in his opinion, the Official Language Committee is the most important committee of Parliament.

Shri Amit Shah requesting members of the committee said that we should create an environment in which the development of the Official Language Hindi should take place easily as a friend of local languages. He said that it should not be done through imposition, if it was imposed, Hindi would have been rejected and would have died. If Hindi has not died, it is because we never tried to impose itself. For example, there cannot be competition between Gujarati and Hindi and Kannada and Hindi and other languages because both of them are like friends or sisters. If we move forward with this spirit, then only we will be able to take this work forward.

The Union Home Minister said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the work of translating the entire curriculum of technical education and medicall education into the official language has been started and change is about to come in the country. If syllabus of technical education and medical education is translated into official language, then children studying in Hindi can complete the process of medical examination and become a doctor in and they can also do research in Hindi. He said that in the same way, the curriculum of all the disciplines of engineering in technical education would also be translated. Research in local languages will fulfill Acharya Vinoba Bhave’s dream. Shri Amit Shah said that many leaders in the freedom movement like Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, Nehru, Rajendra Babu and Vinoba Bhave were prominent in this mission. They kept the aspects of official language and Devanagari script in front of the people of every state. Official language is the link to connect this country, but at the same time the importance of local languages should not be diminished. We are moving in this direction at a fast pace and will be able to fulfill the resolve of the Freedom Fighters in the times to come. Shri Shah said that Narendra Modi has associated the official language with nation. Swabhasha, Swadeshi and Swaraj were the three foundations of our freedom movement. The sacraments of Swaraj can be imagined only from Swabhasha and Swadeshi. The idea of Swaraj transformed into Independence on 15 August 1947. Rajendra Babu had said that our official language Hindi is the mother of the collective consciousness of the nation, this concept is going to come true today.

Shri Amit Shah said that Hindi should be used even within justice and discussion with jurists should be done for it. The role of official language Hindi in the freedom movement should be the theme on 75 years of independence. It should be presented before the Parliament of the country that how much our local languages and official language have contributed to the country’s devopment. The Home Minister said that the local litterateurs wrote literature to give impetus to the movement. It should be the collective effort of all of us that the theme of the regional conferences and the national conferences should be based on this. By calling experts and litterateurs a message should be sent to the whole country that how big a contribution of local languages and official language has been in our freedom movement. Along with this, regional history should also be properly translated in the official language. Lal Bahadur Shastri had made special efforts in this direction but after that efforts are progressing at a slow pace. For example, if a child from Gujarat has to read about the Vijayanagara Empire, then there is no choice but to read it in English, there are examples of many other such states.

Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah said that after discussing with the MPs of various parties, a list of local language books of local history should be made and the Culture Department of the Government of India should translate the books  and make them available in good libraries of the country. There should also be a system for their sale. He said that if the history of every part of the country from Kashmir to Kanyakumari becomes available in the official language for children studying history, then automatically the promotion of the official language will increase and this will enrich the knowledge of children.

The Union Home Minister said that there is similarity between our languages, there is also an invisible dialogue and it can be understood only after experiencing it. He said that many words of every language in the country are associated with some another language, the root of grammar is also the same.

Shri Amit Shah stressed that the acceptance of Hindi should be with consent and only then we will be able to make the official language the formula of national unity which was espoused by our freedom fighters. Shri Shah said that the government is ready to accept every good suggestion. The Union Home Minister said that when we are going to enter the 75th year of Independence, both the relevance and utility of our committee increases a lot. He called upon everyone to make Hindi more popular through collective efforts. He said that the Prime Minister has also promoted and spread our language by speaking in Hindi on international forums. He said that all speeches given by the Prime Minister in Parliament are also in Hindi and the committee should take inspiration from this.

Shri Amit Shah said that for the first time in the Tokyo Olympics, commentary was arranged in Hindi, and this is a matter of great encouragement for us.

medalists, namely Neeraj Chopra, Ravi Kumar Dahiya, Mirabai Chanu, PV Sindhu, Bajrang Punia, Lovlina Borgohain and the men’s national Hockey team, at a gala felicitation program at the Ashoka Hotel in New Delhi today. Among those present on the occasion to felicitate  them also included Union Minister of Law and Justice Shri Kiren Rijiju; Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Shri Nisith Pramanik; Secretary-Sports Shri Ravi Mittal, and Director-General, Sports Authority of India, Shri Sandip Pradhan.

Let me first congratulate our Olympians, our medalists on behalf of 135 crore Indians for their outstanding performance. We are so proud of everyone: Union Minister @ianuragthakur #Tokyo2020 #Olympics #Cheer4India

Gold medalist Neeraj, silver medalist Ravi, bronze medalists Bajrang, Lovlina and Manpreet returned to India after a long flight today after gracing the closing ceremony of Tokyo 2020 last night. They were joined by the other medalists Mirabai and Sindhu during the grand felicitation.

Sports Minister, Shri Anurag Thakur said, “Tokyo 2020 was an Olympic Games of many firsts for India. The success of Team India at the Olympics is a reflection of how New India desires and aspires to dominate the world…even in sports. The Olympic Games showed us that with self-discipline and dedication we can be champions. Team India excelled and inspired while Indians cheered and celebrated all around. Truly sports is a great unifier as our athletes come from villages and cities, north to south, from east to west. Their journey is an incredible story of resilience and sporting excellence.”

The Sports Minister further said that there were many firsts, a 128-member Indian contingent, 7 Olympic Medals, our first Olympic gold medal in an Athletics event, two successive medals in consecutive Olympic Games by PV Sindhu, a medal(bronze) won by the Indian men’s team in hockey after a gap of 41 years and a historic entry to the semi-finals by the Women’s hockey team. We also had the first female sailor from India to qualify for the Olympics – Nethra Kumanan, first Indian fencer from India to make it to the Olympics – Bhavani Devi, the best place achieved by an Indian in Equestrian eventing – Fouaad Mirza, the best-ever finish for Indian Rowers, the highest-placed finish by an Indian in golf by Aditi and a national record was set in steeplechase by Avinash Sable. And let me add, the foundations of sports in India are firm; under Prime Minister Sh Narendra Modi’s leadership various schemes such as TOPs and Khelo India have shown results ensuring podium finish. We will continue to support our sports persons and we endeavour to make India a sporting powerhouse, the Minister affirmed.

Shri Kiren Rijiju praised the performances of all the athletes and reiterated that India will be a force to reckon with by the 2028 Olympics. “I am thrilled beyond words to share this space with our champion athletes today. This is a historic event with India registering its best ever performance in the Olympics. We have much to be proud of, we have a hockey medal after 41 years and a first-ever gold in athletics. And it’s not just our medal winners, each athlete has put their best in Tokyo and I congratulate all of them. This is just the beginning because India’s resurgence in sport is visible now and I am confident that by 2028 Olympics India will be a force to reckon with,” Shri Rijiju mentioned.

Shri Nisith Pramanik lauded performance of the Indian athletes in the Tokyo Olympics and said, you have made India proud. Congratulating all the medal winners, Shi Pramanik added that Indian contingent has won 7 medals in the Tokyo Olympics, highest so far in any Olympics. It is an historic and memorable event which will be a great source of inspiration for the coming generation to take up competitive sports and do India proud.

Several ‘Firsts’ and other highlights came out of Tokyo 2020 for India, starting with Neeraj Chopra, who won the historic gold for India in athletics by throwing 87.58m at the men’s Javelin Throw final. Not only is this Independent India’s first gold in Athletics at the Olympics but also the only medal ever by an Indian from Athletics.

PV Sindhu became the only female sportsperson from India, to win two successive Olympics medals – silver at Rio 2016 and bronze in Tokyo 2020.  Mirabai Chanu joined the legendary Karnam Malleswari to become the only second weightlifting medallist from the country and the very first weightlifter to win the silver medal.

The Indian men’s hockey team, meanwhile, won their first medal in hockey at the Olympics since their gold medal at the Moscow Olympics 1980, whereas the India women’s hockey team entered the semifinals of the Olympics for the first-time ever. The Tokyo Games, which saw a record representation of 128 athletes from India, also registered their highest tally of medals from any Olympics, which were 7 medals.

Ravi Dahiya became the second wrestler to win the Olympics silver medal from the country, while Lovlina Borgohain became the second female Olympics bronze medalist after the great Mary Kom, and the third Indian boxer overall to win an Olympics medal. The other highlights of the games included Bhavani Devi, Nethra Kumanan and Aditi Ashok. While Bhavani became the only fencer from India to make it to the Olympics since the sport was introduced, Nethra became the first female sailor from India to qualify for the Olympics. Aditi Ashok, meanwhile, finished 4th in golf and registered the highest-placed finish for any Indian in the sport at the Olympics

Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers welfare Shobha Karandlaje wrote an open letter to congratulate woman players who represented India at Olympics. In her letter She said, “At the outset, I want to congratulate all the participants representing India on the Olympic stage and making us proud. These talented and motivated participants are setting records and reaching goals that we didn’t think possible. I especially want to congratulate all the strong female athlete role models dominating the Indian Olympics stage. These women are not only breaking sports barriers in India, but also creating substantial social impact being the powerful role models that they are. In the name of millions of women in our nation, I am grateful to each one of you.”

The Minister mentioned “India never had a dearth of women role models. Great rishis like Gargi and Mithreyi, valiant warriors like Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi, Onake Obavva, Kittur Chennamma, sports icons like Saina Nehwal, P. V Sindhu, Sania Mirza, Mary Kom and several others and astronauts like Kalpana Chawla. Women represent the fulcrums of our Indian society. We are the proud custodians of one of the few cultures that worships women and womanhood. Today’s Indian women are more powerful than ever before with diverse roles yet capable of holding the family unit intact. Women who are homemakers are one of the biggest champions and unsung heroes of our Indian society.”

Ms. Shobha Karandlaje also added,  “I want to address the sentiment that is being instilled in girls and women these days that they are victims of the society, subjugated, tortured and devoid of basic rights. While this may be true in some extreme cases, the Indian society that worships the powerful goddess Durga has the strength and resilience to rise above them. Women subjugation was non-existent in ancient Indian societies. We have several matriarchal societies today as a reminiscent of the past.”

The Minister stated, “on a personal level, as a woman myself, I understand and relate to the hardships and challenges a woman has to face. I want to exhort to parents of female children that they must be supportive of whatever paths they want to chose, just like they would for a boy. But this does not have to be at loggerhead with our cultural values or by the blind imitation of the West breaking apart family units. Our women are capable of so many wonderful things because their freedom and aspirations are supported by their mothers, fathers, and husbands. We live in a strong society with an unwavering foundation that produces many women role models for us to look up to. These heroes serve to inspire women all over the nation to break their mental shackles do better each day.”

Minister also assured, “like a mother or sister, I will always have your back, supporting you in every way possible.”
